Confessions of a Breastfeeding New Mom

To that new mom who is battling low supply and trying to breastfeed/pump feed your baby, I wish I had someone to say this to me.
You are enough ! You are doing your best.

What are the only things that will help improve your milk supply?

Hydration is key

Contrary to popular belief drinking milk does not promote milk supply. Though milk is an excellent source of calcium to a lactating mother, the new mom may consume any fluids and keep herself hydrated. I reccomend tender coconut. It’s rich in nutrients and is a great hydration tool. No your child will not catch cold. Cold is a viral infection ( cannot be induced by diet)

Atleast 3 litres of water per day is reccomended

Galactogogues

Fenugreek is a popular Galactogogues that works but only when it is soaked and germinated. Tasted like crap but worked for me. Initially I consumed the dried seeds with water. Wish somebody corrected me earlier.
Almonds. Again soaked overnight and consumed either alone or in powder with milk. Tasty and effective.

Prescribed Ayurvedic capsules.

Always take these on prescription by your pardiatrician only. They come in many names and come even as granules. They basically all contain garlic and a number of proven milk boosting herbs. Alternatively you will find of the counter Shatavari health mixes that can be consumed with milk. Do consult your doctor before starting a new drink.

Pumping

Feed the baby on each breast everytime for 20 mins atleast. After feeding each time pump yourself, even if there is no supply the body gets signal that baby needs more and can catch up and make more milk
✔️✔️Power pumping. ✔️✔️

This is what saved me. A typical power pumping schedule will last for one hour.

If you are using a double pump then. The cycle goes thus,

10 mins of pumping, 10 mins of rest followed by 10 minutes of pumping and 10 mins of rest and final 10 minutes of pumping. Pumping simultaneously always works wonders.


Skin to skin

Milk production needs oxytocin which is naturally secreted when u keep your baby skin to skin. Mothers who feed by a shield due to latching issues have to do this every three to four hours. Undress both you and baby and keep baby on chest and wrap both of you together with a cotton sari ( baby wearing , yes)

What’s in a Toddler’s Diaper Bag?

Everyone’s talking about the diaper bag essentials for a new mom. The toddler mom is always perceived as an educated and we’ll researched and evolved species. But truth is my days of research got over the day this minion exited my womb. He has left me with very little space in my day to wash my hair. Where would I go researching ??

So I decided to bite the bullet and make an exhaustive list. This is all that you are going to need in your diaper bag. You have it all sorted if you have these

Water is of utmost essense and I believe carrying a flask so that it’s room temperature no mater what climate you are travelling in. Flasks are easy to sterilise and maintain too. Staying hydrated is very important for both you and the baby

A separate bottle/ sipper for the baby depending on what stage he is in. I carry two. One for milk and juices and one for water.

An extra set of clothes, diapers and socks for the baby. They tend to have accidents only when u are least prepared. A medium sized towel that can be used for various purposes. This can be rolled and also serves as a neck pillow if the baby want to nap somewhere on your lap. I always carry a baby comb too and some moisturiser. What’s essential is a disposal cover for your wet-wipes or soiled tissue.


Always have a small toy, book and teether that the baby likes to distract him or entertain him when needed.

A small box and metal spoon for baby food ( sustainable clean and eco friendly) A small pack of emergency snacks if the food gets over.

Now for the mom list. You will need your purse, mobile and the charger ( don’t want the battery to go low ever) A compact and lipbalm/ lipstick. I always carry extra hair band and clips cause my son keep meddling with my hair and pulling out my hair accessories. A book to unwind with if baby decides to nap.

7 Super Breakfast Ideas for Toddler Moms – sorted for the week.

No scientific research has yet proven how the toddler,that tiny human being , smells that you are a little off your game that particular day and decides to be demanding and fussy in full swing. They have some radar! As it is their energy levels are matched only to a fully combustible NASA rocket engine and dealing with it is truly rocket science.

As mums of these magically evolving creatures called toddlers ( I doubt they are human in this stage) one needs to be fully equipped and at all times ready to run a marathon and then walk back home. What are some quick and high energy food that can be your breakfast fix while managing the circus that you no call home.

Between morning routine, family members heading out to work and lunch prep for them, to meeting the needs of an attention craving insistent toddler the mom’s breakfast always takes a back seat and is replaced with cups of strong coffee. This is the first step to fail. And fail miserably. By 11am you are drained of energy and the baby is in full swing while you are counting minutes to that nap. If he decides to skip the nap. You are fried alive.

These energy rich foods can save your exhaustion and give you that kick start to play and most importantly enjoy your brat. What more you can plan for one every day of the week and you are sorted.

1. Monday-Fortified Cereals.

What’s beautiful about them is you only have to open the pack. Now a days cereals come fortified with iron, vitamins and calcium that are if utmost essence to women in their late 20s and early 30s. The right nutrition in this age sets the rhythm for a hormonal balance that makes menopause which comes 2 decades later a cakewalk. Add in some almond milk or soy milk and you have a wholesome meal on your plate in a jiffy. One that’s yummy too.

2. Tuesdays-Idly and lentil powders.

The Indian boon. Idlies or rice cakes as the west calls them are packed with carbohydrate and protein and paired with lentil powders that are easily available in any supermarket. This is a 5min breakfast fix. If you are feeling indulgent, throw in some mint leaves, coriander leaves and handful of roasted gram with an inch of ginger in the mixie and tada you have a restaurant worthy side dish for your idly.

3 Wednesday- Seasonal fruit smoothie with yogurt.

This again is a 3 minute fix and my favourite breakfast especially in the summer. With mangoes being seasonal. Beating in some mango pulp with store bought yogurts are a yummy and fulfilling breakfast option. Alternatively you may use strawberry, litchi and ripe guavas too. Yogurts are a great source of good cholesterol and rich in calcium. The fruits are rich in vitamins and this is a harmonious nutrition jugalbandi on your taste buds

4. Thursday – The Protein Rich Salad

Boil some chickpeas, brown channa dal and throw in some fresh veggies like sliced tomatoes and lettuce, paneer and you have your quickfix salad ready. Additionally you may add chia, sunflower seeds for texture. Drizzle with olive oil or melted nut butters or garlic butter to garnish

5. Friday – Takeaway Sandwich

The easiest of them all is a peanut butter Sandwich. I use this for the cheat days, when u feel like pampering myself. The alternate option can be any Sandwich spread and cut tomatoes and cucumbers. You may use the above said seeds for crunch on sandwiches too.

6. Saturday – Powerpacked dosas or protein dosa

Soak split Bengal gram and urud dal in water for half an hour and grind along with few pulses of garlic and red chillies. Mix with Rice powder (purchased from store) and water and the dosa batter is ready. Season with salt. The dosa is flavoured and can be had on its own. Curd is my favourite sides. Cooking time takes about 15 mins maximum for the dish.

7. Sunday – Swiggy it!! This is also my favourite kind of breakfast once a week ♥️ With the advent of online food delivery , one must never skip breakfast. Ever.

We began with ragi puttu and kadala curry with a twist. Though I had my reservation I am a convert now. Besotted with how tasty they were.

She had made a deep-fried bindi side dish which elevated the taste buds to a harmonious dance of pleasure.

Her buttermilk seasoned with onion and spices with a twist was creamy and left us hungry for more.

I couldn’t imagine a pure non-vegetarian like me to be converted by the taste of her cooking !! I could eat veggies all day if she cooked them.

This day 15 months back!!❤️ ❤️
A little human had been in my life and managed to turn it 360 degrees and a quarter.
I feel like I have known him for ages. I know what he is gonna do next second, I know what he feels and what he is trying to say.
But I wasn’t always like this. 15 months ago I was clueless. I didn’t even know how to hold him. He was so tiny and pink and fragile. The first time he held my hand and I burst into happy tears at that time it felt like a desperate plea from him to hold on. I held. We both survived.
Dear new mommy, right now you might seem clueless, you might even hate the parenting demands. Understand that it’s okay to be overwhelmed with all this. It gets better, trust me. It gets really good.
I wasn’t one of those mothers who naturally parented right. I made mistakes and learnt and made some more mistakes. Its okay!! Don’t beat yourself.
You are the best mother your baby can have. Each day will bring in new lesson. Let’s Learn together.
